What are BCAAs (branch chain amino acids)?
Before we get into BCAAs, let’s talk about amino acids.
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Think about them link individual LEGOs; just as you can build different types of structures with legos, our bodies use amino acids to build various proteins (which are essential for building and maintaining lean muscle mass and an efficient metabolism!)
There are 20 different amino acids commonly found in proteins, and can be categorized into essential and non-essential.
Essential amino acids can not be produced by our bodies, so you must get them from the foods you eat: meat (beef, poultry, pork), fish, eggs, dairy products, beans nuts and seeds. Our body can produce non-essential amino acids on it’s own.
Amino acids are essential molecules for life, and play a critical role in numerous functions of our body:
These are critical, because they:
Building and repairing tissues: Muscles, organs, skin, hair, and nails.
Producing enzymes: Catalyze biochemical reactions in the body.
Forming hormones: Regulate various bodily functions.
Transporting nutrients: Hemoglobin carries oxygen in the blood.
Supporting the immune system: Antibodies are proteins that fight infections.
BCAAs are comprised of are a group of three essential amino acids:
Leucine: Plays a crucial role in muscle protein synthesis.
Isoleucine: Helps regulate blood sugar levels and energy production.
Valine: Involved in muscle growth and repair.
Now the most important question - why should you care about BCAAs?
Because they directly impact your health and weight loss efforts.
