A review of diet debacles and fitness fads since the 1970s

One of the BEST feelings we (and our clients) have, is the fact that we don’t have to diet again!

Embarassingly, we have done SO many fad diets through the years, and we want to give you a funny (stupid, if we’re being honest), look at some of the most questionable diet and fitness trends diet culture has pushed on us over the last 50 years:

The Groovy 70s:

  • Grapefruit: The Fat-Burning Fruit (Allegedly): Remember the Grapefruit Diet? Apparently, this citrus wonder had magical fat-burning powers. We can only imagine the sheer volume of grapefruit consumed during this era.

  • Jane Fonda's Workout Videos: Leotards and Legwarmers Galore: Jane Fonda brought aerobics into our living rooms, and we all tried to imitate her moves in our most questionable leotards. Let's just say, flexibility wasn't always our strong suit.

The Glamorous 80s:

  • The Atkins Diet: Carbs Be Gone! The 80s ushered in the reign of low-carb diets, with Atkins leading the charge. We traded our beloved pasta and bread for mountains of bacon and eggs.

  • Step Aerobics: Taking Fitness to New Heights (Literally): Step aerobics was the rage. We climbed, descended, and generally sweated profusely while trying to keep up with the instructor.

The 90s: Where Things Got a Little More "Zen"

  • The Zone Diet: Finding Your Inner Balance (Or So We Hoped): This diet focused on achieving the perfect balance of protein, carbs, and fat. Let's be honest, most of us were just happy to get through the day without accidentally derailing our Zone.

  • Tae Bo: Fighting Fit (and Maybe a Little Embarrassed): Billy Blanks brought martial arts and boxing into our living rooms. While we may not have been the next Bruce Lee, we certainly got a good workout.

The 2000s: The Rise of Extreme Measures

  • The Paleo Diet: Back to the Stone Age (Diet-Wise): If our ancestors could see us now, they'd probably be scratching their heads. The Paleo Diet, with its focus on caveman-approved foods, had us hunting for berries and avoiding anything resembling a loaf of bread.

  • CrossFit: WODs and Woes: CrossFit exploded onto the scene, pushing fitness enthusiasts to their limits with high-intensity workouts. Let's just say, we've all experienced the joys (and pains) of a particularly brutal WOD.

The 2010s: The Age of Intermittent Fasting and Keto Crazes

  • Keto: Fat-Burning Machine (Or So They Say): The ketogenic diet took the world by storm, promising rapid weight loss by forcing the body to burn fat for fuel. We swapped our beloved carbs for avocados and bacon, and our breath may or may not have smelled slightly like almonds.

  • Intermittent Fasting: The Art of Time-Restricted Eating: This trend had us experimenting with various eating windows, leaving us perpetually hungry and wondering if we were actually starving ourselves.

Of course, the 2020s are still yet to be determined, and it’s time to stop dieting and truly - work with us.
